Alex Ellis has been appointed as the British High Commissioner to the Republic of India, bringing a wealth of experience in security, EU affairs, and strategy. Previously, he served as the Deputy National Security Adviser for the Integrated Review on foreign and security policy, as well as the Director General in the Department for Exiting the EU. His roles included overseeing the UK-EU security partnership, international agreements, and engagement on Brexit. Ellis’ diplomatic career also spans key positions, such as the British Ambassador to Brazil and Portugal, Director of Strategy in the Foreign Office, and a member of the cabinet of the President of the European Commission. His civil service journey began in South Africa, supporting the transition to multi-party democracy. Outside of his professional life, Ellis is passionate about music, theatre, and cricket.
